The Legend of the Seventy Pede
Of all the aspects of Seventy lore, none
is more beloved at Reunion time than the legendary Seventy-Pede.
Historians relate that at the Twentieth Reunion-- on the occasion of
the First In Locusts Parentis reunion-- planners made a valiant attempt
to draw the class together. To this end, the costume shop at McCarter
Theater was commissioned to fashion a creature with a tiger's head and
a body formed by the arms and legs of seventy members of the Seventy
family.
That first year it was extremely
difficult to enlist participants to march in the 'Pede, and indeed, one
classic moment from the Class video from the 20th shows Kirk Unruh
attempting to convince people to don the 'Pede. As he attempts to
coerce participants, standing outside of the 'Pede he claims "Come on,
we're all in this together." And from the 'Pede a small girl shouts
back, "You're not in it!!!" Shamed by this sequence, in later years Mr.
Unruh even marched at the head of the 'Pede, a death defying act on hot
days. At its better moments, the 'Pede has been known to do the wave,
the swim, the airline stewardess salute ("Bye-bye"), as is makes its
way down the P-rade route.
