Community Service Project – 2010 Update
After five successful years our Community Service Project continues to
grow. At the time of our 35th reunion we sponsored 3 summer internships
for Princeton undergraduates and this summer, after our 40th reunion,
we will be sponsoring internships for 8 interns in three different
cities—New York, Baltimore and Los Angeles. We are part of the PICS
(Princeton Internships in Civic Service) which is the main source of
summer internships in non-profit organizations for the students. This
summer the PICS program will be sponsoring over 60 internships. Class
of 1970 internships include: The Resource Foundation, an organization
that links donors worldwide with private development organizations in
Latin America to try and increase the self-reliance and living
standards of the disadvantaged; the Montefiore Medical Center where the
intern will be involved in a research project with the Quality
Management Department; the Global Peace Initiative of Women which is an
international, multi-faith organization that tries to bring
resources—economic and educational—to areas of conflict with the hope
of stimulating reconciliation; My Friend’s Place, a drop-in center in
Hollywood which serves homeless youth ages 12 -24, where the intern
will help develop and run a cultural infusion program; the Natural
History Museum of Los Angeles County, where the intern will be working
in the development office; The Huntington Museum in LA where the intern
will be working in the research department; Descanso Gardens in LA
where several opportunities are available in research, development or
horticulture; and working with the Office of Community Partnerships in
Montgomery County, MA, to develop a food innovation center to promote
agriculture innovation and improved nutrition for the residents of the
county. In initiating and sponsoring this type of work we are bringing
Princeton students into the process of helping to solve social problems
and enrich our communities. In addition it is rewarding to serve as a
mentor for the students involved and get to know future Princeton
alumni. The pool of applicants is much larger than the number of
internships available and we encourage you to get involved by either
finding a non-profit in your community that would like a summer intern,
by mentoring one of the summer interns, or by financially supporting
the efforts already underway by your classmates. Last year there were
over 300 applicants for about 60 internships. Interns will receive
$4500 for the 10 weeks of work, and the administrative cost per intern
is about $1500. PICS does have an endowment but like most investments
it is under pressure and the program cannot grow without continued
funding from sponsors like ourselves. Donations can be made to: PICS
